Countdown to Moomin’s Day 2025 🎉🥳
Moomin’s Day
Every year, on Tove Jansson’s birthday, Moomin fans worldwide come together to celebrate the enchanting world she has created. Some years, on this date, August 9th, Arabia releases limited-edition Moomin mugs. This day has been named Moomin's Day and marks Tove Jansson's birthday.
Currently, there are four Moomin’s Day mugs that have been released. The first one was in 2018, the second one in 2021, the third one in 2023, and the fourth one was in 2024.
All mugs were released on Moomin’s Day (August 9th) in a limited supply. No one knows the exact number of mugs that are made (except for the Platinum Sea Breeze mug, which was limited to 5000 pieces), but they are all limited-edition mugs, meaning that these mugs will never be produced by Arabia again.
The first Moomin’s Day mug was released in 2018. The motif on this mug was inspired by Tove Jansson’s own island Pellinge which she bought together with her brother, Lars, in the late 1940s. On the island, they built a house that they called Vindrosen (The Wind Rose).
On the mug, you see Moomintroll and Moominmamma sitting on a rock by the water watching the sunset. You can recognize Moominmamma with the purse to her left and observe a yellow-orange sky and the blue color of the water.
The second Moomin’s Day mug was released on August 9th, 2021, and features an illustration portraying the first day of spring. The illustration originates from Tove Jansson’s book Moominland Midwinter from 1957 and the book of songs (in Swedish: Visor från Mumindalen) from 1993.
On one side of the mug, you see the Moomintroll and Moominmamma sitting on the railing of a wooden bridge. Moominmamma is recognized by the purse to the left of her while they are sitting and looking at the horizon. On the other side of the mug, you see Snufkin standing, with both his arms in the air, looking at the moon.
During winter, Moomintroll goes into hibernation, and Snufkin goes south beyond the Lonely Mountains. However, when spring arrives, Snufkin returns to the Moominvalley. And the Moomintroll is always eager to see his best friend return to the Moominvalley on the first warm day of spring.
The third Moomin’s Day mug was the 2023 one that was both a celebration of Tove Jansson’s birthday but also of Arabia’s 150th anniversary. The mug came out in two versions—a regular one and a platinum version that was limited to 5000 pieces. These platinum mugs could only be purchased through a raffle on Arabia’s website for one week in June 2023.
The normal version of the mug was sold in the usual way on August 9th in selected stores and online. Like all the other Moomin’s Day mugs, this normal one was also a limited-edition mug, but the number of mugs made was not disclosed.
The illustration on the mug is of Little My, Moomintroll, Moominmamma, and Moominpappa on the shore. You see Moomintroll standing on a barrel and Little My standing on a big seashell. Moominmamma is holding her purse, and Moominpappa has a fisherman's hat on and is holding an oar from the boat. The mug has a white background, and the whole motif is blue. On the inside of the mug, there are two blue-color seashells.
The fourth Moomin’s Day mug was released on Friday, August 9th 2024 in selected stores and online.
On the mug, you see Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden playing by the lake. The sun is out, and the flowers have blossomed. Snufkin has just returned from his winter travels, and he is standing with his arms in the air, looking at the sky. The motif has a yellow-green background.
